Now that April is coming to a close and the weather is warming up, gardening season is upon us! Whether it’s planting new flowers or growing some seasonal vegetables to serve at the dinner table, it’s time to get proactive. Here are three tips to get your garden ready for summer:
1. Don’t forget about herbs. When you’re planning your vegetable garden, including some herbs has many benefits. Beyond simply adding variety, herbs can attract beneficial insects to help keep your garden healthy—doubly important If you’re planning on growing vegetables like cucumber or zucchini.
2. Avoid working with wet soil. Soil gets compacted when wet and can cause damage to plant roots. Therefore, It’s best to wait till the soil is dry enough to crumble when held before working your garden—wet soil gets compacted and can cause damage to plant roots. If you find your soil isn’t quite dry enough yet but you want to walk in your garden to get started, try laying down planks to displace the pressure of your feet over a wide surface and keep your plant roots safe.
3. Plant cool season vegetables. If you’re looking to get your vegetable garden started as soon as possible, items like spinach, lettuce, beets, peas and radishes are great to plant this time of year. These cool season vegetables are ideal for our current season. Lettuce and peas, in particular, are great for the end of April as they can be grown in warmer weather, as well.
